Rat F**ked. The review is excerpted here...
David Daley, in his new book Rat F**ked: The True Story Behind the Secret Plan to Steal America’s Democracy, provides a second opinion that is worth considering. Daley does not blame the American voter for the ills of democracy; rather he targets the institutions themselves. More specifically, in this book Daley targets the practice of partisan gerrymandering by documenting how Republicans have rigged recent elections through the creative use of a redistricting pen.
2017 was a year like no other. It began with the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States. Enough said. 2017 was a crazy year, each day more surreal than the previous. The year ended with more debate regarding Trump’s sanity than the merits of his policies. Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that words matter. Even when using only 140 characters, we have never scrutinized language more. 2017 was all about words and what they say about us.
Look at the words that defined us this past year. Dictionary.com has claimed that their “word of the year” is complicit. Merriam-Webster has coronated feminism. The Cambridge dictionary cited populism as one of the most searched for definitions. And the Oxford Dictionary stated Youth Quake best defines 2017. 2017 was defined by the significant changes brought about by you and me, everyday people. It would seem to me that the best word for 2017 and 2018 for that matter is CITIZEN.
Being a good citizen means many different things to many different people. But to us, according to help from Socrates’ Apology, citizenship means something specific. Being a good citizen means showing “eternal skepticism.” Citizens engage in “unbridled inquiry” and “ceaseless examination.” Citizens foster conversation. For Socrates the mark of a citizen is being a gadfly.
Cannot think of a better way to begin 2018. Think critically. Doubt what you hear. Be willing to engage in verifiable fact-finding missions. Talk to others. Be a good citizen. Be a gadfly. In 2018 be Gnatural.
